The recovery of the Abanilla landfill reaches its final stretch with the execution of almost half of the works of the last phase (03/07/2018)

The recovery of the waste dump of Abanilla reaches its final stretch with the execution, in just three and a half months, of almost half of the works of the last phase.

Specifically, and after the end of last year's emergency actions to control leachate spills definitively, the Community has already completed 55 percent of the works for the adaptation, sealing, decommissioning and restoration of this plant.

The next action, which will begin imminently, is the elimination of one of the deposits built for the storage of leachates collected by the automatic extraction and pumping system, as well as the treatment thereof through an authorized manager.

Specifically, it is planned that throughout the month of July the extraction and management of 1,800 cubic meters of leachates will begin (the raft has a capacity of around 3,000 cubic meters), to subsequently proceed with the dismantling of the raft and the restoration of the land to its original state, which will eliminate the problems generated by the neighbors of the bordering municipalities, the smells in the area.

This project, which has a budget of 1.8 million euros and a deadline of twelve months, consists of covering with topsoil and revegetation, after waterproofing, of the vessels and areas with waste.

This was announced today by the General Director of Environment and Mar Menor, Antonio Luengo, during a visit to the works, undertaken by the Community to avoid the risks that could lead to the delay in the actions by the company that managed this plant.

"At present, and once concluded in October of last year the emergency actions, the risks of stability and leachate spill in the area are kept under control." In mid-March, in addition, we started the necessary works for the final sealing of the plant and the regeneration of the area, a priority project for the Community and of which we have already executed almost half of the works, "said Antonio Luengo.

Joint project

During his visit, the general director of Environment was accompanied by the general director of Climate Change and Environmental Quality of the Valencian Community, Joan Piquer, since it is a joint project of both administrations, as well as by the mayor of Abanilla, Ezequiel Alonso, and members of the Vertivega association.

In this sense, and taking into account that the affected lands belong to the two autonomous communities and that most of the waste buried in an irregular manner by the merchant that managed the plant came from municipalities of the Valencian Community, the General Director of Medio Environment insisted on the importance of acting in a coordinated manner.

"From the regional government we are working tirelessly to recover the area and ensure the safety of the neighbors, but to complete this restoration and for subsequent monitoring is fundamental coordinated action of the two autonomous communities, both in the management of total leachates collected in the rafts as in the surveillance plans once the plant is closed, "explained the general director of Environment and Mar Menor.

Currently, in fact, both autonomous communities have requested the central government a game of 4.2 million euros to promote this final restoration and the management of leachate in the common areas of both regions that were affected by the irregular action of the company responsible for the plant and that led to the withdrawal, in 2011, of the management license and the obligation for the company to take charge of the sealing and environmental restoration.

After verifying the delay in this project, the regional government took over the forced subsidiary execution at the company's expense.

Since then, the Community has invested about 5.1 million euros in actions for the closure of the plant and the recovery of the affected areas.
