The University of California and Eurosemillas, the alliance that has allowed to expand 1,200 million plants in 50 countries (24/10/2018)

Eurosemillas, the national leader in plant variety revenue, is the exclusive master license of the University of California for the exploitation outside the US of its protected varieties of fruits and vegetables.

The Riverside campus is a world leader in agricultural R & D and in 2016 alone channeled an investment of 140 million dollars in research projects

A delegation headed by the Deputy Chancellor of Research of the Riverside campus of the University of California (UC), Rosibel Ochoa, visited the stand that Tango Fruit Man has in Fruit Attraction to meet with Juan Cano, president of Eurosemillas and the person in charge of the aforementioned brand.

The main milestones in the alliance that both entities have sealed since 1989, have been passed in the trans-cur of the meeting, when the Spanish group, the national leader in income from the exploitation of plant varieties, acquired the condition of 'master license exclusive' of the UC for the patents of varieties of fruit and vegetables.

Since then, the innovations of this center and the business model consolidated by Eu rosemillas have allowed to expand outside the US and in 50 countries including Spain - more than 1.2 billion plants, a record in the global business of the varieties protected 'from the author' and also dissociated in many of these crops.

For the head of Research of this campus, this alliance is "the best bet for the internationalization of our patents, which, in turn, generates multimillion-dollar income for uni ve rity, which can be reinvested in new developments to follow being at the forefront. "

"American agriculture is one of the most profitable in the world and that is largely thanks to the innovative effort made by entities such as the University of California and the Riverside campus. Davis, with whom we maintain agreements- and we export beyond that of their natural market that added value they generate, applying our vision of this business ", explains Juan Cano.

And that is that the seeds are involved in the process of obtaining new varieties, investing between 1 and 3 million a year in R & D projects, a good part of them in the UC, although also in other Spanish entities- has perfected its methods of control and au di to ry and of di fferential form, is not limited to marketing its innovations but goes further: it plans the production, analyzes the markets where its fruits or vegetables will subsequently be sold in order to outline its exploitation licenses and invests in the promotion of their acquisitions with brands such as Tango Fruit, which is now in Fruit Attraction.

Riverside is one of the most important research centers in the world in agricultural R & D.

With more than 23,000 students, this campus offers 101 bachelor's degrees, 55 master's degrees and maintains 42 professorships.

Only in 2016, it channeled an investment of 140 million dollars in investment projects.

Its Experimental Agricultural Station has one of the most important citrus collections of the pla ne ta and has developed, in its almost one hundred years of history, more than 40 varieties of oranges and tangerines like the late seedless Tango (re gis brought in the EU as Tang Gold) or Gold Nugget.

In similar terms we can speak of its strength in other crops typical of temperate and warm climates, such as the avocado with va ries from today also in full expansion as Lamb Hass or Harvest- or the asparagus De Paoli, all they are very much praised by the farmer and the international markets.

In the case of this vegetable, in addition, Eu ro se miles has financed a genetic improvement program since 2007 and maintains several test fields for new varieties in Andalusia.

Eurosemillas, beyond its agreement with Riverside, maintains a second alliance of identical nature with the other large campus of special agricultural potential, Davis also of the University of California - which is also a world leader in plant innovations but this time for crops of more temperate climates, such as strawberry, peach, apples, pears, table grapes and vine, walnut, almond and pistachio patterns.

Riverside and Davis are two of the ten large campuses that make up the University of California, which has more than 237,000 students, around 190,000 professors and researchers, indirectly employs 430,000 people and has three national reference laboratories.

In its almost 150 years of history, more than 1.7 graduates and doctors and up to 61 Nobel prizes accumulate.

Some studies cite their contribution to the eco not mine Californian in more than 43,000 million dollars.
