The emergency work in the Abanilla landfill can be drawn about 10,000 tons of leachates (20/05/2016)

The Minister of Water, Agriculture and Environment, Adela Martinez-Cacho, said this morning that "thanks to emergency work being carried out at the landfill Abanilla are drawn about 10,000 tons of leached".

Martinez-Cacho said that "the work will increase once the leachate extraction system is put in place by hydraulic pumps."

It also underlined that "the regional government will promote all the necessary actions to recover the affected and eliminate risks from mismanagement of the commercial area."

The Minister of Water, Agriculture and Environment this morning visited the landfill Abanilla, accompanied by members of the Regional Assembly, the local mayor, Ezequiel Alonso, and representatives of Ecologists in Action and Vertivega platform in order to see 'in situ' the state of emergency works.

Balance of performances

The activity in the landfill remains suspended since 2011. In 2013 the company began implementing restoration work, sealing and adaptation of the site to the Directive and the Royal Decree of landfills, according to the project contained in a resolution of the General Directorate Environment.

However, experts from the Directorate General of Planning and Environmental Assessment in July 2015 noted that the company did not meet the implementation schedule provided for in the approved project.

Thus, emergency actions included the start of the subsidiary execution for the recovery and restoration of the landfill by the regional administration, which was addressed with the aim of carrying out the restoration of environmental law in cases has been infringed .

Thus, it is intended to ensure proper closure and sealing of landfill Proambiente of Serratilla in the Sierra de Abanilla and get recovery of damage to the environment, in the shortest possible time and at the cost of causing company's contamination.

Subsequently, the actions for the management of leachates for six months and the drafting and implementation of the project work necessary also declared emergency to minimize risks by sealing and closure of the vessels 1,2 and 3 facilities the company and complementary actions, with a lead time of eight months and an amount of 2,065,000 euros.
