The Civil Guard detained five people for the illegal burial of thousands of tons of garbage (08/04/2011)

Civil Guard agents in Murcia, in the operation called "UNDERGROUND", developed over the past months, have arrested a total of five people in relation to the formation of the illegal dumping of waste on a farm planted with lemon trees in the municipality the town of Abanilla (Murcia).

The five detainees are accused of crimes against the environment and natural resources, endangering the integrity of the people, the quality of air, soil, water animals and plants, the work of recovery and disposal of waste.

In addition, the primary responsibility for the facts has been charged with a crime of fraud and another against the rights of workers.

Those arrested are the owner of the land where the dump had been established illegally, the manager and an employee of the transport company to ship the waste to the farm, and the manager and an employee of the company responsible for illegal dumping.

The investigations began in November 2010 when the Civil Guard found serious irregularities in one of the vessels of the landfill in the town of Abanilla.

Subsequent investigation led the deputies to a lemon farm in the same township, where last March, surprised many trucks illegally downloading tons of garbage in a pit of about 4,000 square meters and several meters deep.

The residues were immediately engulfed by heavy machinery specifically dedicated to such work in order to prevent discovery.

In fact, the cavity made for the burial of the waste was practically silted.

Of the actions taken by investigators show that the company now stopped collecting garbage from a treatment plant in the province of Alicante with the initial purpose of transferring them to a legal landfill in the town of Abanilla.

The transport was carried out using heavy trucks from a company specialized in the sector.

However, the waste is not reached their legal destination, but were diverted to the field of lemon trees, where it proceeded to its immediate burial.

According to research, the amounts diverted to illegal landfill, which lacks any kind of authorization, would be several thousand tons.

Among the debris found by the Guardia Civil, who has made a number of tastings in the field to verify the existence of those underground, are drugs, metal containers, cardboard and glass, batteries and organic matter from different backgrounds ...

As part of this operation has proceeded to the arrest of five persons as alleged perpetrators of crime AGAINST AGAINST ENVIRONMENT AND NATURAL RESOURCES, accusing the head of this group also the crimes of fraud and AGAINST THE RIGHTS OF WORKERS identified as:

- Spanish, 41, resident of Almoradi (A).

- Spanish, 41, resident of Dolores (A).

- Moroccan, 32 years and resident in Callosa de Segura (A).

The detainees and the proceedings initiated have been made available to the Magistrate's Court in Cieza (Murcia) has exercised judicial management of this operation.
