The Ecovidrio Zone Manager, Roberto Fuentes, and the General Director of the Environment, Francisco Marín, delivered this morning in the auditorium of the headquarters of the Ministry of Agriculture of the awards of the campaign "The Little Recyclers of the Region of Murcia ".

They have managed to recover 47,120 kg of glass container waste thanks to this campaign, which aimed to raise awareness among school children about the importance of recycling glass container waste.

The initiative has had the participation of 8,944 schoolchildren between 6 and 12 years old, belonging to 41 primary schools.

During the campaign, which took place in the months of October and November, various revitalizing actions have been carried out in all municipalities based on educational games on recycling so that children, transmit that learning to families and the educational community, converting the act of recycling glass in a daily habit.

In addition, this initiative was intended to increase the recycling rate of the participating municipalities and that the campaign was a benchmark in the Region of Murcia.

Therefore, a contest was launched in which the localities of Abanilla, Beniel, Las Torres de Cotillas, Molina de Segura and Santomera competed with each other, with the aim of becoming the most recycling city of glass packaging waste.

For this, in all the schools a green container was located with the image of the campaign and the name of the center.

In such a way that the municipality that accumulates more kilograms of glass per student enrolled through said recycling point would be the winner of the competition.

The winning city has been Abanilla recycling an average of 18 kg of glass container waste per student, being awarded the Corner of the Little Recyclers, a recreational space where children can enjoy an area equipped with leisure and relaxation within a municipal facility

Likewise, schools were incentivized with a monthly prize per location for schools that recycle more kilos of glass container waste during the two months of the campaign.

The prize consists of a lot of school or sports equipment for the winning centers valued at € 100.

In October, the winners were CEIP Santísima Cruz de Abanilla, CC Azalea de Beniel, CEIP Susarte de Las Torres de Cotillas, CRA Campo de Molina de Molina de Segura and CEIP Madre Esperanza de Santomera.

While in November the winners were CRA Comarca Oriental de Abanilla, CEIP Río Segura de Beniel, CEIP Maestro J. Ferrer de Las Torres de Cotillas, CRA Campo de Molina de Molina de Segura and CEIP Madre Esperanza de Santomera.

Finally, a theatrical performance was held in the five municipalities with a theme on glass recycling attended by a total of 5,104 students.

Environmental benefits of glass recycling

The glass that is deposited in the containers is 100% recycled and is used for the manufacture of new containers, indefinitely and without losing the original properties.

Recycling glass prevents the growth of landfills.

Recycling glass is a key element in the fight against climate change.

By using recycled glass calcine in the manufacture of new containers, the extraction of raw materials from nature is avoided, avoiding soil erosion and deforestation of our environment.

In addition, the emission of CO2 in the manufacturing process is minimized and energy is saved.
