The Civil Guard detained the manager of a landfill for burial Abanilla illegal waste (07/07/2011)

The boreholes in the areas of the landfill and its surroundings, staff and specialized equipment have resulted in sufficient evidence that thousands of tons of waste could have been buried illegally more than 10 feet deep

Civil Guard officers in the Region of Murcia, in the operation called "UNDERGROUND II", developed over recent months, yesterday arrested the manager of a landfill located in the municipality of Abanilla (Murcia) and alleged perpetrator of a crime against the natural resources and the environment.

The investigations began in November 2010 when the Civil Guard found serious irregularities in one of the cups from the landfill in the town of Abanilla.

Subsequent action led the agents to a lemon farm in the same township, where last March it surprised many trucks illegally dumping tons of garbage in a pit of about 4,000 square meters and several meters deep.

The residues were immediately buried by machinery specifically dedicated to this work in order to prevent discovery.

In fact, the cavity made for the burial of the waste was practically clogged.

For these facts, the Civil Guard proceeded to the arrest last April, five people for a crime against the natural resources and the environment.

Investigations continued after this, on the premises of Abanilla waste dump, which has all environmental permits to operate, and is, according to the actions taken, municipal solid waste from various localities of the Region of Murcia, as the very Abanilla Santomera Beniel Fortuna, and other towns in the province of Alicante and Elche, Orihuela and Torrevieja.

This landfill was the place where the waste should have arrived, finally, were being diverted to the field of lemon used as a dump illegal burial.

On land annexed to the legal landfill in the town of Abanilla, the Civil Guard discovered the existence of certain areas could have been buried, without authorization, significant amounts of waste, which have been identified several habitat types including environmental interest protected flora species at the regional level and different species of wildlife also of interest.

After all, the staff of the Civil Guard and the Directorate General of Planning, Evaluation and Environmental Control of the Autonomous Region of Murcia, conducted surveys in 4 to 6 different areas of the landfill in order to verify the existence of such illegal waste burial.

The work, which lasted 6 days and were performed by a company that specializes in conducting such activities, resulted in the discovery of waste at different depths up to 15 meters.

Among the residues found were highly degraded organic matter, alkaline batteries, plastics, cardboard, aluminum cans and glass.

In all, the Civil Guard picked up the corresponding samples that were sent for analysis to the laboratory of the Environment Service of the Directorate General Criminalistics Corps.

Arrested:

In the second phase of this operation has proceeded to the arrest of a person as the alleged perpetrators of crimes against NATURAL RESOURCES AND ENVIRONMENT, 58 years old and a resident of Orihuela (Alicante).

Yesterday, the detainee was brought before the magistrate court in office on duty in the town of Murcia, where he had been arrested, but the performances by such acts continue in the Court of Enquiry.
