An interpretation center and a training possible to recover the historic values ​​of Chícamo river in Abanilla (15/09/2015)

The municipality of Abanilla has today with two new spaces that will retrieve historical values ​​and traditions Chícamo river.

The Minister of Water, Agriculture and Environment, Adela Martinez-Cache, today joined members of the Community of Irrigators of the Huerta de Abajo and Sahués Abanilla in the launch of these two new areas, which represents an investment recovery total of 194,545 euros.

The Minister noted that "both projects financed under EAFRD will enable the Community of Irrigators of the area recover the outstanding historical, natural and cultural heritage of Chícamo river."

Adela Martinez-Cache stressed that "the rehabilitation of these areas continue to make strides in sustainable development. We also give young people the tools so they can continue to cultivate the garden of Abanilla and the rural and natural tourism power area".

Training and reception

The Training Centre and Welcome allow schoolchildren, teachers and scientists have a space where form and analyze the culture of water and the environment.

This project will also serve to value the building of the miller's house, adjacent to the mill of Chícamo, and retrieve a tourist attraction for the town and its districts.

The investment will also enable to publicize and raise awareness of the high natural value of the territory and boost tourism in the area.

The miller's house was built in 1844 by the Community of Irrigators of the Huerta de Abajo and Sahués, and ceased operation in the 60 The project included the reconstruction of the work, respecting the original plans by a structural system reinforced concrete and load-bearing walls of ordinary masonry, pitched roof with wooden beams and curved tile roof.

It has carried out the coating of the interior walls and exterior plaster by using traditional lime mortars.

The project has also included the installation of elements of woodwork both inside and outside.

It has given the construction of the plumbing and electricity necessary for the normal development of the proposed activity, and has conditioned access to the building in the near surroundings.

The miller's house is located on the right bank of the river Chícamo, near the village of Macisvenda, about ten kilometers from the center of Abanilla.

The total investment for this project is 100,000 euros, of which 75,000 correspond to EAFRD.

Water management

The implementation of the Interpretation Center of Historical Hydraulic Chícamo use of river will preserve and enhance the natural heritage of the area and to value and give the building a museum use.

It will also help to recover a tourist attraction for the town of Abanilla and villages.

The interpretive center is located in the old mill, like the miller's house, was also built in 1844. It also stopped working in the decade of the 60. The building of the mill has a plant height and is attached to the input channel of the aqueduct water and body that houses the doubling cube, a key part of the whole.

The actions undertaken have focused on the rebuilding of the old structures, respecting the original plans, as well as the provision of necessary for developing facilities activities.

The total investment of the Interpretation Centre is 94,545 euros, of which 70,909 are from the EAFRD fund.
